Sonia Smith is a Texas-based freelance journalist. A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, she has worked as a reporter at the Baton Rouge Advocate, an assistant editor at the Kyiv Post in Ukraine and an intern at Slate Magazine and the Dallas Morning News.

Sonia has lived in a Khrushchev-era high rise on the outskirts of Moscow and an almost 100-year-old house in the capital of the Pelican State. She has reported on convict cowboys at the Angola Prison Rodeo, overachieving children at the National Spelling Bee and language politics in Kiev. She once tried to convince illegal smugglers at the Polish-Ukrainian border to have their pictures taken.

Sonia was a finalist for the 2008 Livingston Award for Young Journalists for her investigation into sexual abuse at the Louisiana School for the Deaf.
