Sonia Smith is a staff writer for TexasMonthly.com. A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, she has also written for Slate Magazine, The Associated Press, the Baton Rouge Advocate, the Kyiv Post in Ukraine and the Dallas Morning News.

Sonia has lived in a Khrushchev-era high rise on the outskirts of Moscow and a double-gallery house in Uptown New Orleans. She has reported on convict cowboys at the Angola Prison Rodeo, overachieving children at the National Spelling Bee and language politics in Kiev. She once tried to convince illegal smugglers at the Polish-Ukrainian border to have their pictures taken.

Sonia was a finalist for the 2008 Livingston Awards for Young Journalists for her investigation into sexual abuse at the Louisiana School for the Deaf.
